OUR CLUB
has a very short history. It was founded in 1993 as a Breakfast Club by members of the business and professional community of Wolverhampton. It first met in the Novotel in St. George’s Parish from which it found its name.
The Club has been a dual gender Club almost from foundation, with about a third of current membership being ladies.
There are a total of five Rotary Clubs in the City. This one meets as you will see, for Breakfast. Another, the largest, meets for Lunch and the other three meet for Dinner - all on different days. Contact us if you would like details of these and of course if you would like to come to one of our breakfast meetings. Despite the early hour, like other Rotary Clubs, we have activities such as speakers, competitions or demonstrations and once a month, Rotary business to discuss. Despite all this, we aim to finish by 08.30 am to allow people to get to work.
To attend a meeting or for any other enquiry, call Mike Bates on 01902 670311.
WOLVERHAMPTON
is an industrial City of some 235,000 population which can trace its origins to Medaeval times. It is situated in what is known as 'the Black Country ', in the centre of England.
Whilst still a centre of manufacturing, the city has changed radically over the years. It now boasts a University which has its main campus in the City Centre. Additionally there are several very noted schools in the City including the Grammar School which dates back to 1512, Tettenhall College and The Royal Wolverhampton School, all of which have excellent academic records. The City has an impressive Youth Orchestra with well over 100 young musicians and a very active Central Youth Theatre. The Grand Theatre which dates back to Victorian times , has recently been refurbished and is most popular.
The main Anglican Church in the centre is St. Peters. One of its claims to fame is that Button Gwynett , born in Worcestershire, and one of the signatories of the American Declaration of Independence, was married there to a local girl before emigrating! He became Governor of Georgia and died in a duel aged 42. Not many Americans seem to know the name but there he is at the top of the left hand column of the list of signatories! St. Peters has the original Marriage Certificate in its archives.
